A woman comes to the ER with a chief complaint of vaginal bleeding. She cannot really remember her last menstrual period. She is asked for a urine sample and while voiding notes passage of some tissue. A pathology report on the tissue shows a possibility of an Arias-Stella phenomenon. This suggests that she has either a normal intrauterine or an ectopic pregnanc.

(a) An ectopic pregnancy can be defined as the abnormal implantation of the embryo in places other than the uterus- mainly occurring in the fallopian tube.
(b) The embryo is generally implanted in the uterine endometrium, which becomes proliferated under the effects of estrogen & progesterone.
(c) The three divisions of the fallopian tube are-
1- a funnel like opening (fimbriated ends) lying close to ovaries called infundibulum which opens into the peritoneal cavity by means of ostium
2- a middle dilated ampulla whee fertilization occurs
3- last part which opens into uterus called isthmus.
