Question

The following diagram is the Figure 3-28 on page 176 of the textbook. (If you are using 5th edition, it's Figure 3-29 on page 166.)

What is the name of the circuit component bounded by the red box?

In order to write the data on I0; I1; I2 to memory word 2, what values should be on A1, A0, CS, RD and OE?

Block diagram of a 4*3 memory. Each row is one of the four 3-bit words.

A read or write operation always reads or writes a complete word.

Explanation / Answer

The circuit component bounded by the red box is the 2 to 4 line decoder

A1A0 = 00 gives output 1 for word 0 select line

A1A0 = 01 gives output 1 for word 1 select line

A1A0 = 10 gives output 1 for word 2 select line

A1A0 = 11 gives output 1 for word 3 select line

To write the data on I0; I1; I2 to memory word 2,

word 2 select line is to be selected by the decoder so A1A0 = 10

it is a write operation, So RD is 0

CS is the chip select and should be 1 for any operation to be performed. so CS = 1

And OE (output enable) is 0, as we dont need to see the output now.

A1 = 1

A0 = 0

CS = 1

RD = 0

OE = 0
