Question
The following dataset is from an experiment that was designed to measure the heritability of seed weight in the Morning Glory, Ipomoea purpurea. A number of plants were chosen randomly from a base population to be maternal parents and to be paternal parents. Maternal and paternal parents were randomly paired for crossing, producing 16 full-sib families. The first column represents average seed mass (in mg) for the paternal and maternal parents of each family, while the second column represents the average seed mass for 10 offspring of each family.
Seed mass
0.9
Estimate the heritability of seed mass in this population of Morning Glories.
Mid-parent Offspring Mean 0.5 3.150.9

heritability h2=M2-M/M1-M
M2=3.60
M1=1.18
M=3.11
THEREFORE h2= -0.25
M -Mean seed mass of the population
M2- mean seed mass of the progeny
M1-Mean seed mass of a group which have lowest seed mass
