Question

Find enthalpy: Target: CH4(g)+2O2(g) ---> CO2(g)+2H2)(l) Delta(H) ? Given: C(s)+2H2(g) ---> CH4(g) Delta(H) = -74.8 kJ C(s)+O2(g) ----> CO2(g) Delta(H)= -393.5 kJ 2H2(g)+O2(g) ---> 2H2O(g) Delta(H) = -484.0 kJ H2O(l) ---> H2O(g) Delta(H) = 44.0 kJ Can u please show steps, Thank You.

Explanation / Answer

We have four reactions.. C(s)+2H2(g) ---> CH4(g) .. (1) ..........C(s)+O2(g) ----> CO2(g) ..(2) ...................2H2(g)+O2(g) ---> 2H2O(g).. (#) .......... H2O(l) ---> H2O(g) ..(4) .......... and our desired reaction is CH4(g)+2O2(g) ---> CO2(g)+2H2O(l) using above 4 equations, so if we do -1* (1) + 1*(2) + 1*(3) -2*(4) . then we get our desired reaction... negative sign represents reversing that particular reaction (i hope you know that already! ).. well so Enthalpy = 74.8 -393.5 -484 -2*44 = -890.7KJ
