Question
A) A heard of domestic alpaca produced wool with an average fiber diamerter of 25 micron. the variance within the herd was 50 micron^2 of which 11.0 microns^2 is attributable to the enviornmental variability. what is the broad-sense heritability?
B) The rancher wishes to produce a new generation of animals with an average fiber thinckness of at least 30.2 microns. To do this, he selects as parents of this new generation a male with fiber thickness 37.9 microns and a female with 35.0 microns. assume there are no interactions or correlations between environmental and genetic components. What is the minimum value of h^2 needed to achieve the rancher's goal?
Explanation / Answer
A) Given,
Environmental variance V(E) = 11 micron2
Phenotypic Variance V(P) = 50 micron 2
Broad sense heritability is denoted as H2
H2 = V(G)/V(P)
To find V(G) we use the formula:
V(P)= V(G) + V(E)
Hence, V(G) = V(P)- V(E)
V(G) = 50-11
=39
Subsituting in H2 = V(G)/V(P)
We get, H2 = 39/50 = 0.78
Hence broad sense heritability is 0.78
