Question
Part A Acetylene torches are used for welding. These torches use a mixture of acetylene gas, C2 H2, and oxygen gas, O2 to produce the following combustion reaction: magine that you have a 6.50 L gas tank and a 3.50 L gas tank. You need to fill one tank with oxygen and the other with acetylene to use in conjunction with your welding torch. If you fill the larger tank with oxygen to a pressure of 145 atm, to what pressure should you fill the acetylene tank to ensure that you run out of each gas at the same time? Assume ideal behavior for all gases. 2C2H2 (g) + 502 (g)4CO2 (g) + 2H2O (g) Express your answer with the appropriate units. View Available Hint(s) PValue Units SubmitExplanation / Answer
As we can see from the reaction,
2C2H2(g) + 5O2(g) = 4CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
for complete combustion of acetylene,
5 mol of O2 is required for 2 mol of C2H2
So 1 mol of O2 will be required for 2/5 = 0.4 mol 0f C2H2
Now,
Moles of O2(g) n = PV/RT = 145 atm x 6.50 L/RT = 942.5/RT
Accordingly moles of C2H2(g) for complete combustion
= 0.4 x 942.5/RT = P1x3.50/RT
RT, RT cancels out each other,
Therefore, P1 = 0.4 x 942.5/3.50 = 107.71 atm
So the pressure of C2H2(g) is 107.71 atm
