Question
Part A
A sample of gas in a balloon has an initial temperature of 37 C and a volume of 1.89×103 L . If the temperature changes to 81 C , and there is no change of pressure or amount of gas, what is the new volume, V2, of the gas? Express your answer with the appropriate units.
Part B
What Celsius temperature, T2, is required to change the volume of the gas sample in Part A (T1 = 37 C , V1= 1.89×103 L ) to a volume of 3.78×103 L ? Assume no change in pressure or the amount of gas in the balloon. Express your answer with the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
A) T1 = 37C = 37+273 = 310 K , V = 1890 L , T2 = 81C = 81+273 = 354 K
we use PV = nRT equation , here R is gas constant , n , P are constant since they mentioned
Hence V = constant x T
Hence V2/V1 = T2/T1
V2 / 1890 = 354 /310
V2 = 2158 L = 2.158 x 10^3 L
B) T2/T1 = V2/V1
T2 / ( 310) = ( 3780 /1890)
T2 = 620 K = 620 - 273 = 347 C
