Question

Part A A sample of ideal gas at room temperature occupies a volume of 24.0 L at a pressure of 762 torr . If the pressure changes to 3810 torr , with no change in the temperature or moles of gas, what is the new volume, V2? Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Part B

If the volume of the original sample in Part A (P1 = 762 torr , V1 = 24.0 L ) changes to 77.0 L , without a change in the temperature or moles of gas molecules, what is the new pressure, P2 ?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Part-A:

PV = nRT ;    Pressure in atm only in ideal gas equation [1 torr = 0.00131579 atm only 4 significant figures]

P1V1 = P2V2;

V1 = P2V2 / P1 = (1.00 atm)(24L) / (5.0 atm) = 4.8 L

Answer: V2 = 4.8 L

Part-B:

P2 = P1V1 / V2 = (1.00 atm)(24L) / (77.0 L) = 0.31168831168 atm = 237 torr

Answer: P2 = 237 torr
