What observations did you make with the egg albumin and gelatin? 2. What observations did you make with Alanine, Tyrosine and Tryptophan? 3. Was your unknown receptive (positive) to the test? 5. Identification of unknown: Unknown Number Identity of "Unknown" A. Is it a protein or an amino acid? Depending on this answer, answer (B) OR (C) B. (i) If it is a protein, does it have aromatic amino acids? (ii) If it is a protein, does it have free amino groups? C () If it is an amino acid, is it an aromatic amino acid? (ii) If it is an amino acid, what is the identity? Some equations from: hittp:llpeople.anwplatt.edu Parts of this lab edited revised from a lab COMPILED BY Dr. R. VAN LANEN, St. Xavier University, Chicago.ILExplanation / Answer
Presence of ammonia or amines can be detected with the help of ninhydrin.Ninhydrin while reacting with proetins and amino acid gives purple colour which indictes the presence of protein with free NH2 group.
1) as purple colour was obtained it indicates presence of protein with free NH2
2) alanine ,tyrosine and tryptophan are amino acid bearing COOH and NH2 group.
3) yes it was positive either it is an amino acid or a protein
