Question

C.Discussion All distillations use boiling point differences to complete separate volatile tiquids from mixnures. In differences between stearn distillation and distillation of miscible rmple) in terms of distilling temperature.and cop ass the distillate during distillation? (6 pts) composisiom of the Which type of distillation (steam, fractional, simple) would you use to separate the compounds below? Briefly explain your choices. 2 points each 1. Separating liquid anethole and anise seeds (2 pts.). Anethole

Explanation / Answer

Steam distillation: it brings hot vapour (usually from water) into the flask and the vapour take out desire compound in small fraction from the crude (seeds) and finally transport to the condenser. It useful for thermally unstable compuds with high boiling point (usually aromatic compouns from seeds)

Fractional distillation: It separates a mixture of liquids with different boining point. Larger the boiling point, easier is the separation. In this method, first you will collect low boiling liquid and the higher boiling liquid. It has a particular type of condenser where you can just rotate the collector junction to collect in differen roumd-bottomed flask.

Normal distillation: Some liquids contaion impurities (solid or liquid) having very high boiling pont than the liquid we want in pure form. In that case, a normal distillation is done at 10 degree higher temperature than the boiling point of the liquid.

Please note that frac. distillation is done to seperate liquid mixture having close boiling points .

1) organic compounds may decompose at very high temperature. Anethole has very high boiling point of 234 degree C as well as thermally unstable. That is why steam distillation is usually done to extract it from the seeds.
