Question

When an acid name ends in -ic acid, there is often a related acid whose name ends in -ous acid. The formula of the -ous acid has one less oxygen atom than that of the -ic acid. With this information, write formulas for: (a) sulfurous acid and sulfuric acid (b) nitrous acid and nitric acid. What is the pH of a solution that has a hydrogen ion concentration of 1.0 * 10 ^-9 M? Show your calculation. Please answer the two questions below, after reading Chapter 8 in the textbook and reviewing the corresponding Powerpoint slides. Make sure that you give your answer in a clear and justified manner, providing necessary explanation on how did you come up with it. Please post your thread by Thur Jun 8th, 11:50 pm. The oxidizing agent our bodies use to obtain energy from food is oxygen (from the air). If you breathe 15 times a minute (at rest), taking in and exhaling 0.5 L of air with each breath, what volume of air do you breathe each day? Air is 21% oxygen by volume. What volume of oxygen do you breathe each day? As a rule, metallic elements act as reducing agents, not as oxidizing agents. Explain. Do nonmetals act only as oxidizing agents and not as reducing agents? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1)

a)

Sulfuric acid is an acid and its formula will be H2SO4

sulfurous acid will have 1 oxygen lesser than sulfuric acid. Its formula will be H2SO3

b)

Nitric acid is an acid and its formula will be HNO3

Nitrous acid will have 1 oxygen lesser than Nitric acid. Its formula will be HNO2

2)

Given,

[H+] = 1.0*10^-9 M

use:

pH = -log [H+]

= -log (1.0*10^-9)

= 9

Answer: 9
