Question

Balanced Equations and Reaction Types. Write balanced, net ionic equations for each of the five reactions and, using the scheme outlined in the introduction, indicate the reaction type for each: redox, acid/base, or precipitation. Part 1: Cu(s) + 4 HNO_3(aq) rightarrow Cu(NO_3)_2(aq) + 2 NO_2(g) + 2 H_2O(l) Part 2: Cu(NO_3)_2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) rightarrow Cu(OH)_2(s) + 2NaNO_3(aq) Part 3: Cu(OH)_2(s) rightarrow CuO(s) + H_2O(l) Par 4: CuO(s) + H_2SO_4(aq) rightarrow CuSO_4(aq) + H_2O(l) Part 5: Zn(.s) + CuSO_4(aq) rightarrow Cu(s) + ZnSO_4(aq)

Explanation / Answer

Part 1:-

Chemical equation is :-

Cu (s) + 4 HNO3 (aq) ------------> Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2 NO2 (g) + 2 H2O (l)

HNO3 and Cu(NO3)2 are strong electrolytes therefore they are completely dissociated into its ions in aqueous solution .

so

ionic equation is :-

Cu(s) + 4H+(aq) + 4NO3-(aq) -----------> Cu2+(aq) + 2NO3- (aq) + 2 NO2(g) + 2 H2O (l)

and

net ionic equation is :-

Cu(s) + 4H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) -----------> Cu2+(aq) +  2 NO2(g) + 2 H2O (l)

This reaction is a Redox reaction because in this reaction Cu get oxidised to Cu2+ by changes its oxidation number from 0 ( in Cu) to +2 ( in Cu2+) and N get reduced in which oxidation number of N changes from +5 ( in NO3-) to +4 ( in NO2) .

Part 2:-

Chemical equation is :-

Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) -----------> Cu(OH)2 (s) + 2NaNO3 (aq)

Ionic equation :-

Cu2+(aq) + 2NO3- (aq) + 2Na+(aq) + 2OH- (aq) --------> Cu(OH)2 (s) + 2Na+(aq) + 2NO3- (aq)

Net ionic equation :-

Cu2+(aq) + 2OH- (aq) --------> Cu(OH)2 (s)

This reaction is a precipitation reaction in which Cu(OH)2 formed precipitates.

Part 3 :-

Chemical equation is :-

Cu(OH)2 (s) -----------> CuO (s) + H2O (l)

This reaction is the decomposition reaction .

Part 4 :-

Chemical equation is :-

CuO (s) + H2SO4 (aq) --------------> CuSO4 (aq) + H2O (l)

This reaction is a acid - base reaction in which CuO act as a base and H2SO4 act as a strong acid .

Ionic equation :-

CuO (s) + 2H+(aq) + SO4- (aq) --------------> Cu2+(aq) + SO42- (aq) + H2O (l)

Net ionic equation :-

CuO (s) + 2H+(aq) --------------> Cu2+(aq) + H2O (l)

Part 5 :-

Chemical equation is :-

Zn (s) + CuSO4 (aq) -------------> Cu (s) + ZnSO4 (aq)

Ionic equation :-

Zn (s) + Cu2+(aq) + SO42- (aq) -------------> Cu (s) + Zn2+(aq) + SO42- (aq)

Net ionic equation :-

Zn (s) + Cu2+(aq) -------------> Cu (s) + Zn2+(aq)

This reaction is a type of Redox reaction in which Zn oxidised to Zn2+ and Cu2+ is reduced to Cu.
