Balance the following redox equations by the ion-electron method: Says they're wrong?? But I think they're right... Be sure to answer all parts. Balance the following redox equations by the ion-electron method: You do not need to enter the states of the species. (a) Br2 right arrow BrO3^- + Br^- (in basic solution) 3H2O + 6Br2 right arrow 5Br^- + BrO3^- + 6H^+ (b) S2O3^2- + I2 right arrow I^- + S4O6^2- (in acidic solution) 2(S2O3)^2- + I2 right arrow (S4O6)^2- + 2I^-Explanation / Answer
a) Br2 + 6OH- ----> BrO3 - + 3H2O + 5e-
Br2 + 2e- ----> 2Br-
so the balanced equaiton is
7Br2 + 12OH- ----> 2BrO3- + 6H2O + 10 Br-
b) 2S2O3 2- ---> S4O6 2- +2e-
I2 +2e- ---> 2I-
so 2S2O3 2- + I2 ---> 2I- + S4O6
