Question

Which solution has the lower pH? a. 0.1 M HCl or 0.1 M HC_2 H_3 O_2 b. 0.1 M NaOH or 0.1 M NH_3 (aq) c. 0.1 M Na_2 CO_3 or 0.1 M NaCl Acetic acid, HC_2 H_3 O_2, is a weak acid that is in equilibrium in the following given reaction: a. Identify the acid and its conjugate base in the reaction above b. Identify the base and its conjugate acid in the reaction above c. Which way will the equilibrium shift if a strong acid is added to the system? d. If a strong base is added to the solution, which way will the equilibrium shift?

Explanation / Answer

(2)

(a) 0.1 M HCl or 0.1 M HC2H3O2

Ans: 0.1 M HCl has lower pH. Because it is strong acid which undergoes complete ionisation, so it exhibits lower pH. But HC2H3O2 is a weak acid which under goes partial ionisation, so it has higher pH.

(b) 0.1 M NaOH or 0.1 M NH3

Ans: 0.1 M NH3. Becuase both the solutions are basic solutions. NaOH is strong base which undergoes complete ionisation, so it has higher pH but NH3 undergoes partial ionisation, so it has lower pH.

(c) 0.1 M Na2CO3 0r 0.1 M NaCl

Ans: 0.1 M NaCl. Becuase NaCl is salt formed by strong acid and strong base, hence it forms a neutral solution having pH = 7.0. But Na2CO3 is a salt formed by strong base and weak acid, so its solution is in basic medium whose pH is more than 7.0.
