Why does food taste different when your sinuses are congested?

The sinus congestion applies pressure to the neural pathway from the tongue to the brain, thus inhibiting the transmission of sensation.

The sinus congestion prevents food odors from reaching olfactory epithelium, which contributes to the perception of taste.

Post-nasal drip alters the chemical composition of the saliva thus altering taste perception.

Sinus congestion does not change the perception of taste.

Explanation / Answer

1. Vision

Audition refers to listening or hearing. Olfaction is the ability to sense smell. Taste refers to perception of flavour of food in mouth. Somatic sense refers to is the perception of shape objects by touch or bodily senses. Vestibular senses maintain the balance movements of eyes, brain and inner ear. Vision is the ability to visualize or see objects through eyes.

Hence among these senses vision and somatic senses can be used to determine the shape of an object. Somatic sense or touch can be used to predict the shape of an object in absence of vision. But vision can the best used to determine object shape as the object is directly visible and the claim can be supported by accurate observable reasons.

2. Proprioception

Proprioception is referred to as “sense of self”. Preprioceptors configure the ability to sense original position of joints and to its control their angular movement.

3. The sinus congestion prevents food odors from reaching olfactory epithelium, which contributes to the perception of taste.

The taste buds on the tongue perceive the taste of but the flavour in the food which contributes to this taste is recognized by the olfactory epithelium in nasal passage. When you are suffering from sinus congestion the presence of thick mucus in the nasal passage prevents these food odors from reaching olfactory epithelium thus making the food taste different.

4. Vestibular and vision

Motion sickness is a condition during which a person usually suffers from exhaustion, nausea and vomit during journey or travel. The condition is also referred to as kinetosis. They generally araise due to inability of the brain to coordinate and conflict between the signals arising from eyes (vision) and inner ears (vestibular) due to drive during traveling.

5. Olfaction deals with the ability of a person to perceive or sense smell. There are numerous signalling receptors present in humans which can enable us perceive and recognize variety of substances or food by their odour. Generally the information required for system users like for transcription, creation of any desired picture or content, communication, message typing etc can be easily conveyed using visual aids or by audition. But it is not always possible to convey the same or all necessary information by olfaction. Since it is not possible to associate all the required information with olfactory senses and present the smell of the source to convey the entire data it is difficult to use olfaction to code (present) information to system users.
