Question
A.An empty flask is filled with 1.00 atm CO2 gas. If the pressure of O2 gas at equilibrium is 5.36x10^-2 atm, what is the equilibrium pressure of CO2 gas?
(The correct answer is 0.89 atm, I just need help getting there.)
B. One reagent in the production of nylon is nitrosyl chloride (NOCl). This compound decomposes into nitric oxide (NO) and chlorine gas according to the reaction below. If 20.0g NOCl i added to an empty 1.0L flask, what will be the concentration of NO at equilibrium?
2NOCl(g) yields 2NO(g) + Cl2(g)
Kc=1.6x10^-5
(the correct answer is 1.4x10^-2, I just can't seem to get that answer)
Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
(A)
The decomposition reaction of CO2,
2 CO2 (g) = 2 CO (g) + O2 (g)
Then initial pressure of CO2 = 1.00 atm
at equilibirum, PO2 = 0.0536 atm
Then, PCO = 0.0536 * 2 = 0.107 atm
Now the equilibrium prssure of CO2 from the above balanced equation,
PCO2 = 1.00 - 0.107 =0.893 atm
