Question
The specifications for a manifold gasket that installs between two engine parts calls for a thickness of 2.500 mm ± .020 mm. The standard deviation of the process is estimated to be 0.004 mm. The process is currently operating at a mean thickness of 2.50 mm.
(a) What are the upper and lower specification limits for this product?
(b) What is the Cp for this process?
(c) About what percent of all units of this gasket will meet specifications? Does this meet the technical definition of Six Sigma?
Step to step would be great!
Explanation / Answer
a) The upper limit and lower limit for this specifications is
Upper limit = 2.500mm+ 0.20mm =2.700mm
Lower Limit = 2.500mm-020mm = 2.300mm
b) The current process control CP = 5O times its standarad deviation (i.e. 0.20mm/0.004mm)
c) The six sigma interval is
X Bar - 2.91*Standard Deviation , X Bar +2.91*Standard Deviation
= 2.500 -2.91 *0.004 , 2.500+2.91*0.004
= [2.48 ,2.51] , Where 2.91 is got from the table of standard normal distribution at z meets sisx sigma criteria
The above interval, answer to question a) is beyond the six sigma not meeting the six sigma standards.
