Question

The distinction between artificial selection and natural selection is important to master. Consider a bacteria that does not cause human disease. Describe these processes using illustrative examples. Your examples may be fictitious, but they need to be realistic and make biological sense.

[2 pts] Describe a specific example in which the bacteria changes (evolves) in a manner that illustrates artificial selection. Your description should contain an explanation.

[2 pts] Describe a specific example in which the bacteria changes (evolves) in a manner that illustrates natural selection. Your description should contain an explanation.

Explanation / Answer

Natural selection : due to increased use of antibiotics , for the treatment of disease caused by bacteria which further lead to the development of resistant strains of bacteria and would not be killed by antibiotics . this bacterium has achieved the resistance trait through modifiication of genes on their genome or acquiring new genes from other resistant species.

Artificial selecion : in this type , the traits of the selected bacteria are usually improved by humans by genetic engineering techniques , we can synthesise the gene in vitro which is responsible for the production of specified protein , tyhen we can insert that gene into bacterium for expression . this additional character , support the growth and evolution of new species of particular bacteria.
