Ethical behavior is the foundation of any healthcare practice reform that aims to make the process more transparent, patient focussed and oriented towards the positive outcome, in addition to acknowledging of patient's well being the ultimate task of the practice. Practices driven by ethical leadership often scale new heights, earning goodwill of the stakeholders and transforming into centres of ecellence through continuous reforms.
Ethics can be defined as " moral principles that govern an individual's behaviors or activity". Other definition of ethics is " A philosophy of defining the the fundamental principles of right and wrong of the human conduct and recommending the most appropriate action". Both the definitions indicate towards defining what is morally right and wrong and thus shaping the ideals of human behaviors that can act as benchmarks to assess the human behavior.
According to ACHE's ethics competencies, leadership encompasses following traits
(a) Communication and relationship management.
(b) Preofessionalism
(c) Knowledge of the healthcare environment.
(d) Business skills and knowledge.
These competencies are a prerequisite for building an ethical framework as per the definitions. The leader needs to be skillful, knowledgeable, an effective communicator and should have good interpersonal skils and professional mindset to make a sound judgement as to what is right approach and what is wrong,define the ethical way of doing the things and convince the others to buy in his ideas of ethics.
Ethics act as guiding principles for the leadership in case of a situation of dilemma. Ethics set a benchmark for the organisation, assigning it a unique place among the healthcare players. It prevents the organisation against the violation of norms and subsequent legal and other issues.
