Explanation / Answer

1.

Why do you think myoglobin is a good out-group?

The out group is a taxon which is outside the group of interest. All the members of the group of interest are more closely related between themselves compared to the out group. Therefore, the out group is connected to the rest of members at the base of the tree.

In the figure, myoglobin fall separate from the group of interest, it stemmed from the base of the tree. So, it is a good out group.

2.

Galago is closely/equally (circle one) related to rat/cow/both (circle one). Provide an explanation for your choice of answer(s).

Galago is closely related to rat. Provide an explanation for your choice of answer(s).

Comparison based on similarity:

If we look the bar at the bottom and how much change it represents. It shows 2% change.

If we look at the length of the horizontal bars connecting rat and galago, it will represent change close to 2%.

Comparison based on tree structure:

Rat and galago are part of two adjacent internal nodes. So, they are closely related.

3.

Salmon is closely/equally (circle one) related to sloth/armadillo/both (circle one). Provide an explanation for your choice of answer(s).

Salmon is equally related to sloth and armadillo (both).

Armadillo and sloth are in same clade at the lowest hierarchy level. They are a sister group. They are connected to Salmon at 5 levels of hierarchy in the tree. They are not closely related to Salmon. They are equally related to Salmon.

4.

Galago and chicken are sister groups. True/False (circle one). Provide an explanation for your choice of answer(s).

False.

Two descendents that split from the same node are called sister groups.

Chicken and galago not split from same node. So, they are not sister groups.

In the tree, armadillo & sloth are sister groups. Rat and mouse are also sister groups.
