Explanation / Answer
The goal of the defective detective is to find the killer who has been butchering people around. He has been reading all the reports about the killing happening in the city and all he wants to do is catch the killer and do something about it. He wants to stop the killings. He is determined to prevent any killings in the future and his goal is to stop any murder or theft from happening.
The indicators that he is observing are related to the papers he has been reading to find out more about the case. The newspaper clippings in his room and the several cases he has been reading on his chair shows that he is observing. Even when he goes out of his house to hunt for the killer; he has been looking for clues and waiting for some clues to pop up. He eventually looks inside a house to see what is happening. He peeps and sees blood splashed on the window.
When he looks at the blood splash on the window he infers that the killer is inside the house and must have killed the woman inside. He goes inside the house and everything that he hears right from mixer, chopping of knife is inferred as killing preparation inside the house.
According to the reasoning he expects a possible killing happeninng inside the room and he expects to catch the dangerous killer. However he is suprised when he finds the old woman inside and sees the tomato soup on the floor, knives that are used for choppinng vegetables and infers that the old woman was only cutting vegetables.
The old woman in the end realizes that the man is panicking every time he hears any noise outside the house. He immediately grabs his gun revealing his anxiety and state of mind. She makes him keep it aside and concentrate on his meal.
