Question

Deep Marine Environments 1. What are the typical sediments deposited on the deepest section of the Pacific Ocean? 2. Under which circumstances could igneous rocks be found in this setting? Continental Shelf Environments 3. Compare and contrast the North America Eastern and Western seaboard. How does the morphology of the two shelves differ? What geologic processes characterize each side? Sketch an East-West topographic/cross section profile, showing the shape and the plate boundaries on each side. 4. 5. What type of sediments-in terms of textural maturity-will be deposited on either side of North America? 6. What is the role of rivers in shaping the depositional environments of the continental shelves? CHAPTER 2 Sedimentary Rocks and Sedimentary Structures 2-15

Explanation / Answer

1. Biogenic silica is the typical sediment deposited on the deepest section of Pacific ocean. So, in the deeper part mainly pelagic sediments are found.

2. Basalts are mainly found in Pacific ocean. If there is vocanism, or subduction then igneous rocks will de found.

3. Eastern seaboard of North America is the coast line through which Eastern United State connects with North Atlantic Ocean. Western seaboard of North America is the coastline through which Western United State connects with North Pacific Ocean. The Eastern seaboard is characterised by low relief and passive margin setting. Bout, on the other side Western seaboard is active margin and is characterised by varied geological features and topography.3 basic types of climate are found in Eastern seaboard- continental climate, tropical climate and temerate climate according to Koppen's climate classification. Here, landfall is rare and characterised by occurrence of hurricane. In Western seaboard, mainly mild temerature is prevailing and the main climate type is oceanic, Miditerranean.Coastal fog is also occur.

5. In the eastern part, mainly igneous and metamorphic rocks are found covered by sediments. volcanism is also associated. Whereas in Western coast, mainly terrigenous siliciclastic rocks and carbonate rocks are found.

7. I choose chadipur beach area which is situated in odisha, Eastern coast of India. Here, mainly aeolian, fluvial, fluvio-marine, marine, tidal processes are active. Due to these processes different geomorphological features like beach, tidal flat, coastal dunes, swamps are formed.

Types of sediments- Here mainly, fine slit to clay and also sand grains are found.

8. The source of the sediments mainly erosional of the landfomrs, different biogenis activity, shell fragments of different organisms.

9. In this beach environment mainly sigmoidal and tabular cross bedding, double mud drape, current ripple, rhombic ripple, current crescent stuctures etc. are found.

10. Delta is prograde in nature represeting shallow marine shelf deposit, whereas estuary is a marine influenced portion of a drowned valley. Delta is coarsening upward, estuary is at first fining upward then coarsening upward.

The example of delta in United state is- Colorado River Delta.

The example of estuary in United state is- The Chesapeake Bay.
