Question

From the personal level, we addressed the ethicality of monitoring employees in non-work hours. Given this context, please consider and answer the following question:

1. If a company provides a vehicle for company business only (such as outside sales), is it ethically justified to place a GPS on the vehicle so its whereabouts are always known?

2 If the vehicle doesn’t leave the employee’s home until 12:00 noon, but the workday was supposed to start at 9:00, is the employer ethically justified in monitoring who comes and goes between 9:00 and 12:00, or would this be an invasion of privacy? (In a 150 words or more).

Explanation / Answer

1. Yes, we can say that this would be ethically justified. If the company has provided the vehicle for company use only, there should be no other use that the vehicle should be put to. The employer would have the right to do so, as well as have a clean ethical and moral conscience.

2. Depending on the situation, the employer has the right to take action if the vehicle provided for company’s use does not leave the house of the employee till 12 noon. Yet, monitoring who comes and goes between that time can also be considered as an invasion of privacy and can be contested by the employee if we want to consider the laws that concern the workplace and monitoring employees.
