Question

From the list given to you for each of the following hypothesis testing situations, indicate the test you would use and explain the reason

Pearsons Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (Test #13)

Spearman Rank Correlation (Test# 14)

Simple Linear Regression (Test# 15)

ANOVA (Test # 16)

Kruskal-Wallis (Test # 17)

1)A researcher wants to study the effect of three modalities for relieving chronic low back pain. The researcher randomly assigns 18 subjects (N=18) to receive massage (n=6), ice (n=6), or hot pack (n=6). Pain is measured through a Likert scale with 0 being pain free to 5 being severe pain.

2)A study tries to assess the effect of four modalities for relieving pain in patients with tendonitis. The researchers select 44 participants and randomly assign them to receive ultrasound, ice, massage or hot pack (each group has n= 11 participants). The time in minutes until the patient reports relief is recorded.

3)Researchers want to assess the relationship between verbal and reading comprehension for a sample of 10 children with ADHD. The scores are based on an ordinal scale (1-100). Ho= There is no association between one’s verbal and reading comprehension ability. Ho: rs=0; Ha: there a positive correlation: H1: rs>0.

4)In a study data were obtained from 135 women and men aged 18 to 27. Their height ranged from 1.59 to 1.93 meters. The relationship between height and weight was studied: weight in kilograms was the dependent variable that was to be estimated from the independent variable, height in centimeters.

Explanation / Answer

The ANOVA is explicitly a test of equality of means of values. The Kruskal-Wallis can be seen technically as a comparison of the mean ranks.

1) Kruskal-Wallis beacuse we need to find the not only that 3 groups are different for pain level but rank each group based on the pain level on Likert scale.

2)  Kruskal-Wallis beacuse we need to find the not only that 4 groups have different times but rank each group based on the time in minutes until the patient reports relief is recorded.

3) Simple Linear Regression because we need to study the relationship between verbal and reading comprehension and check the null hypothesis that the coefficient of the independent variable is 0 for no association between one’s verbal and reading comprehension ability.

4) Simple Linear Regression because we need to study the relationship between height and weight and there is a linera relationship between height and weight. Estimate the coefficient and intercept of linear simple regression equation to estimate weight from the given height.
