Question

From the list given to you for each of the following hypothesis testing situations, indicate the test you would use and explain the reason

Pearsons Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (Test #13)

Spearman Rank Correlation (Test# 14)

Simple Linear Regression (Test# 15)

ANOVA (Test # 16)

Kruskal-Wallis (Test # 17)

1)A researcher wants to study the effect of three modalities for relieving chronic low back pain. The researcher randomly assigns 18 subjects (N=18) to receive massage (n=6), ice (n=6), or hot pack (n=6). Pain is measured through a Likert scale with 0 being pain free to 5 being severe pain.

2)A study tries to assess the effect of four modalities for relieving pain in patients with tendonitis. The researchers select 44 participants and randomly assign them to receive ultrasound, ice, massage or hot pack (each group has n= 11 participants). The time in minutes until the patient reports relief is recorded.

3)Researchers want to assess the relationship between verbal and reading comprehension for a sample of 10 children with ADHD. The scores are based on an ordinal scale (1-100). Ho= There is no association between one’s verbal and reading comprehension ability. Ho: rs=0; Ha: there a positive correlation: H1: rs>0.

4)In a study data were obtained from 135 women and men aged 18 to 27. Their height ranged from 1.59 to 1.93 meters. The relationship between height and weight was studied: weight in kilograms was the dependent variable that was to be estimated from the independent variable, height in centimeters.

Explanation / Answer

1. Kruskal-Wallis

A researcher wants to study the effect of three modalities for relieving chronic low back pain. And the back pain in measured using 5 point likert scale which is considered to be an ordinal scale of measurement. The effect of modalities can be assessed by comparing the distribution of the liker scale scores between the 3 groups. Since, the likert score is measured in ordinal scale assumption of normality will be violated hence, Kruskal-Wallis test can be used to assess the difference of likert scale among three groups.

2. ANOVA

Researcher wanted to compare the time until the patient reports relief between the 4 groups. Since, time is a continuous variable it can be summarized using mean. Hence, to compare mean of more than 2 groups we use ANOVA.

3. Spearman Rank Correlation

The researcher wanted to assess the relationship between two variables which are measured in ordinal scale. Spearman rank correlation is an approprtiate measure to assess the correlation of two ordinal variables.

4. Simple Linear Regression

The study aims to estimate the weight of the subjects using the height. Hence, a mathematical equation has to be formed to estimate the dependent variable weight using the independent variable height. Hence, a simple linear regression can be use to estimate the such an equation which helps to predict the weight for the given height.
