You have just attended a meeting at a local charity that wants to start installing wireless networks in homes for some needy families. There are grants available to supply the basic Internet access that the charity has access to so costs are not a major issue but funding is rather limited. The homeowner will not have to fund this effort and the assumption is that they already have at least three(3) PC’s in their family consisting of adults and children as the primary users. Providing Internet access for them will help those less fortunate than us “close the digital divide” that exists when costs become a major issue.
Assuming that all the computers have 802.11ac wireless capabilities you have decided to volunteer your services to research potential cost effective solutions.
Issues:
1. Each home needs to be provided with a 802.11ac wireless router, a network ready all-in-one printer, a Blu-ray player with streaming digital video for educational programs and movies. You need to research at least three(3) different options for each of these devices and since grant dollars are limited be aware of pricing as well as their overall functionality.
2. Research Internet Service Providers in the immediate area(845 nearby Orangeburg). Consider everything including providers that include: Cable, DSL, Fiber and any other. Compare and contrast their lowest-cost broadband access. Upload and Download speeds need to be compared as well as costs pertaining to the homeowner’s Internet requirements. Costs of modems and/or routers need to be compared and if they can be purchased up front or rented on a monthly basis. Be sure to point out what you feel is the best cost alternative including wired vs wireless connections.
3. Tying back into the article that you read you need to be sure that the network that you will recommend and install has the highest level of security for the homeowner to keep the cyber criminals and hackers out. Determine the best alternative for a router and the various wireless security protocols. Be sure to also concern yourself with what other types of security will be needed on the network such as: antivirus and antimalware software and of course firewalls.
