What constitutes a good design for a survey instrument?

We need to communicate with people about various topics. In research we can communicate with participants through the use of surveys. In research, this is referred to as a survey instrument. Using your textbook, journals, and the Internet, determine what constitutes a good design for a survey instrument. Keep in mind that the survey instrument can be designed a variety of ways and as such, is dependent on the type of research that is being conducted, the questions being asked, and of course the type of participants that will be responding to the survey.

Factors constituting a good design for survey instruments:

1. Objective: A good survey instrument should cover the purpose and objective of the study or a project. Without which it would not make any sense to design a survey

2. Purpose of the survey itself: The participants should clearly understand why and for what is this survey being conducted for. A clear reason should be given on why a participants should spend hi/her valuable time on it

3. How to answer: Next step in a good survey design is to provide with set of instructions the participant need to follow while answering the questions. Clearly defined guidelines has to be provided.

4. Effective questions: The questions in a survey should be short and crisp, clear and relevant to the topic. Getting what you need out of the participant is quite important here. The language used should also be simple and understandable.

5. Measuring: A good survey design will have the rating scale in place, instead of participants writing theory on the same. Theories cannot be measure effectively but with ratings exact numerical measurements can be provided.

6. Statistical analysis: A good design consists of statistical analysis tool used to be measured in a project. This is for analyzer to come to a conclusion and suggest or opinionate on the topic.
