Question

1) Discuss important computer hardware developments that you expect to happen in the next 10 years? How will these affect the business use of computers?

2) What trends are occurring in the development and use of the major types of computer systems?

3) What application software packages are the most important for a business end user to know how to use? Explain the reasons for your choices.

4) What major trends are occurring in software? What capabilities do you expect to see in future software packages?

5) Why is an operating system necessary? That is, why can’t an end user just load an application program into a computer and start computing?

Explanation / Answer

2)
>Computers are becoming physically smaller, faster, more memory, cheaper, more reliable and user friendly, and are increasingly being connected via telecommunications links through organizations.

(or)
>Change is the law of nature, everything keeps on changing and when it comes to computer systems the change takes place faster than anything else. The latest technology of today becomes outdated tomorrow. There is a constant research going on, and everyday there is a new development in the field of computer technology.
>If we analyze the current trends in the computer systems development then we can see that computers today are becoming smaller, faster, compatible, cheaper, portable, wireless and power efficient.
>We can see that the size of computers and computer peripherals are getting smaller and smaller day by day. The function of super computer, which occupied a whole building in the past, is performed by a device which fits in a pocket these days. The size is decreasing but the speed is increasing. The Murray’s law that number of transistor per square inches doubles every year, that is in almost every 18 months, is enough to explain this phenomenon of decrease in size and increase in speed. The capacity of the storage devices is also increasing. The computer in our home has capacity to store more data than earlier super computers. Today everyone can afford a computer and the dream of Bill Gates, One Home One Desktop, is coming true
>The computers are becoming more interactive and easy to operate. They are small and portable you can carry not only the peripherals and data but whole computer with you. With the development of laptops and tablet PCs you can carry your computers easily with you and with WiFi and GPRS be connected with the whole world. Today we don’t need to buy all the computer parts form the same supplier and be dependent on him for the service and maintenance.
>When the whole world is going green, researchers and developers involved in the computer technology are also not far behind, they are constantly trying to develop new advanced computers which are consume very low power. The computer is moving towards the wireless future. Today we can see that everything is wireless, all hardware are wireless these days. The internet connection is also becoming wireless. The concept of cloud computing is gaining popularity and it definitely is the future.

>The pace of technology is so fast that, everything related to computer is changing unbelievably fast. Latest technology of today is obsolete history for tomorrow. Something which was just limited to imagination and was thought impossible yesterday has become reality today, and the same trend will continue in the coming years in field of computer hardware. Although, it is impossible to predict what miracle will be there tomorrow in terms of computer hardware tomorrow, but also I think the development in coming 10 years will be something like
>A growth in the type and usage of smart gadgets and information appliances for input and output purposes will increase.
>Hardware devices will be more powerful in terms of processing speed and capacity.
>Wireless devices will become the standard or norm for many businesses.
>A reduction on the dependency on keyboards and mouse type technology as businesses currently use such technology.
>Storage will improve in terms of media and capacity and with a related reduced cost.

>As mentioned above the inputs and outputs device will be totally different, about which we can only dream of today. We will be using mostly voice commands and gestures to operate the computers and the computers will be advanced enough to understand our emotions and almost read our mind. So in coming 10 years there will be nothing like keyboards and mouse. The output devices will also be totally different from today’s devices.
>The output will be shown virtually in air. The coming era is the era of cloud computing when everything will be in air and the hardware will also adapt to the change accordingly. There wouldn’t be different things like mobile phones, laptops, or anything else. All the human needs will be fulfilled by one single hybrid device. This will perform the function of mobile, laptop, PC as well as all the other devices. The capacity of storage devices will increase, almost all the information of the world will fit in a single cheap which we will be carrying with us around, the best part of this would be that, it will be very cheap, so cheap that even a child would be able to afford al these with his pocket money.

5)
>The instruction set implemented on the computer hardware (the machine language) is very limited. Programs using only these instructions would have to be extremely long and complicated, to perform the various processing tasks required by end users. Application programs thus require the operating system to act as an interface with the hardware, allowing application programs to be shorter, easier to understand, easier to use, and possibly allow multiple applications to run concurrently.

4)
>Major trends are toward easy-to-use, general-purpose application packages and toward natural languages. Expect powerful, multi-purpose, expert-assisted software packages with natural language and graphics-based user interfaces have fast become the norm. Future software packages will no doubt incorporate more voice activated features than we have previously seen. General purpose software packages will probably not incorporate many new features; however the software industry will continue to strive towards ensuring that their new releases are better written, and easier to use.
