Question
1) Determine the acceleration of each object, including its direction.
2)etermine the tensions in the two cords (left and right).
Three blocks are connected on the table as shown below. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block of mass m2 and the table is 0.330. The objects have masses of m1 = 4.75 kg, m2 = 1.40 kg, and m3 = 1.80 kg, and the pulleys are frictionless. 1) Determine the acceleration of each object, including its direction. 2)etermine the tensions in the two cords (left and right).Explanation / Answer
To find the acceleration of the whole system we need to assume that force of tension in rope 1, rope2, and rope 3 is same.
Since mass 1 is greater than other two masses I consider the system is moving COUNTER-CLOCKWISE.
SO FORCES ACTING IN THE DIRECTION OF COUNTERCLOCKWISE ARE POSITIVE and FORCES ACTING IN CLOCKWISE DIRECTION ARE NEGATIVE.
ON mass 1 there are two forces acting Fg(Downwards) and Force of tension (UPWARDS). On mass 2 there are THREE forces Force of tension due to mass 1 to the left, force of friction to right, and force of force of tension to right due to mass 3 horizontally and two forces are vertically Fg downwards and normal force (upwards) and on mass 3 there are two force Fg dwnwards and Ft (upwards).
EQUATION:
Fg1-Ft1+Ft2-Ft2-Ffr+Ft3-Fg3=(m1+m2+m3)a FORCE OF FRICTION IS MU TIMES FN
(4.75*9.8)-(0.330*13.72)-(1.80*9.8)=7.95(a)
a=3.07m/s2
To find tension substitute a in 1 equation:
Fg1-Ft1=m1a
46.55-Ft1=4.75*3.07
Ft1= 32N(its same in every cord as i consider at the top)
