Question

You recently got hired as a Network Coordinator. You have been assigned to work under the Network Administrator of a network which has 5 Windows Servers 2012 EE & 200 Windows 7 workstations. Your company decided to add hosting to one of the services and you have been asked to design some virtualization solutions. You have been asked to host multiple virtual servers to host the customers’ needs. Your supervisor has asked you to do the research necessary to purchase the needed blade servers. What are the key requirements for installing Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012? How will you compare and contrast the use of Hyper-V versus VMWare? What are the pros and cons of using either method? How do they compare with cloud computing? What solutions will you recommend for a medium sized company? You can also recommend additional virtualization solutions. Some of the customers want you to educate them on public, private & hybrid cloud. Can you provide the basic definitions of each and how will your solution translate into one of these kinds of cloud solutions?

Comparision of Hyper V and VMWare:

Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESX are hypervisor based solutions. They install directly on the hardware and require no lower level OS beneath them, however their architecture is quite different.

Contrast between Hyper V and VMWare:

VMWare acts as intermediatry between hardware and virtual machines on the server. Hardware devices are included in it. Hence VMWare is called a direct driver model.

In Hyper V all management functions and access to hardware is controlled via a “root partition” that runs the Windows Server OS.This root partition is actually a special virtual machine, through which hardware I/O requests from child partitions travel via the VMBus architecture. This is called an indirect driver model.

comparing Hyper-V and VMware with cloud computing;

Hyper-V and VMware services offer cloud computing.

Hyper-V, Microsoft product allows companies to combine separate workloads on one server. It calls on a wide variety of services to manage the workloads, including Microsoft SQL Server and some third-party programs.

VMWare, an Intel product is unique because it can actually run other operating systems as if they were on their own computer. VMWare can be self-hosted or used through the services of a hosting provider. vCloud suite looks pretty limited, expensive, and non-integrated.

Solutions to medium sized company:

Midsize organizations face unique IT challenges. Your entire company runs on a few important applications but reliable business technology can be complex and expensive. VMware makes IT simpler to manage and use, highly reliable and a lot less costly - for midsize companies.

On the contrast Hyper-V is provide free of cost by MIcrosoft with windows server 2012. Technologies such as virtualization and the cloud can enable you to achieve your business goals more cost-effectively by helping you get more value from IT while reducing or eliminating up-front costs. Why pay more to virtualize with VMware when you can get a leading virtualization platform built in at no extra cost with Windows Server 2012?

Hence choose according to the company requirement. A company with more servers can have virtualization without risk.

Public,private & hybrid clouds:

Cloud computing comes in three forms: public clouds, private clouds, and hybrids clouds.

Public cloud: a public cloud is nothing but internet.Service providers use the internet to make resources, such as applications and storage, available to the general public in the cloud.

Private cloud: Private cloud are data center architectures. It provides flexibility, scalability, provisioning, automation and monitoring.

Hybrid cloud: These used to control of an internally managed private cloud while relying on the public cloud as needed. This will also be beneficial during predictable outages: hurricane warnings, scheduled maintenance windows, rolling brown/blackouts.

My solution that is Hyper-V provides private cloud. With a Microsoft private cloud solution, your datacenter can be a competitive differentiator.

Hope this is clear.
