Cell gives you the exact location of your cell. Cell references are important because it alows you to locate any part of your spreadsheet by simply entering its address. It can be very helpful if your doing a presentation and you will like your audience to focus on a certain number o percentage in your spreadsheet. Just simply give them the cell address.

I believe that spreadsheets would be useful if it didnt have cell references. Although cell references makes things easier to find whe you have them. However, you dont need to use them especially if your spreadsheet is very detailed.

Explanation / Answer

The second opinion is absolutely wrong. Cell references lie at the core of the spreadsheet desing. They help to create formulas which are independent on the values, but rely o the location, a bit like maths (x + y is independent of values that x and y takes, it just relies that they will have some values). It helps to visualise presentation, help to build charts, graphs, and provide shorthands in the calculations (D01 instead of inputting value 9.0984343 for instance). The more detailed your spreadsheet is, the more you need cell references, not the other way around. rate pls :)
