Question

A mobile phone company has to decide on the number of smart phones and tablet to be produced at one of its factories in order to maximize their profit. Market research indicates that at most 40 of the smart phones and 10 of the tablets can be sold per month. The maximum number of work-hours available is 500 per month. A smart phone requires 20 work-hours and a tablet requires 10 work-hours. Each smart phone sold produces a profit of $120 and each tablet produces a profit of $80. A wholesaler has agreed to purchase all the products to be produces if the numbers do not exceed the maxima indicated by the market research.

Solve this problem in MATLAB

Explanation / Answer

% Given work hours

hours = [ 20 10 ];

% maximum work hours

work = [ 500 ];

% Given sales upper bound

up = [ 40 10 ];

% lower bound

lb = zeros(2,1);

% profits

profits = [ 120; 80 ];

% getting maximum values

res = linprog(-profits,hours,work,[],[],lb,up);

% printing results

fprintf('The number of smart phones and tablet to be produced to maximize profits are: ');

fprintf('%.0f smart phones ',res(1));

fprintf('%.0f tablets ',res(2));

fprintf('Maximizing profit value: $%.0f ',profits'*res);
