Question

Bruce is furious when midterm is returned with a C grade. He tells his sociology professor that he had read each of the assignment chapters three times, and if someone can do that and just be average, then there is something wrong with the test! The professor is outraged by Bruce's comments and they begin to haveheated conversation and both parties make degrading statements to each other.

1-Describe two possible explanation for Bruce's average perfornmance.

2-Provide one(1) personal example of a bahavior for subconscious process, nonconscious process and mindlessness

Explanation / Answer

1)Repeatedly reading of a textbook does not result in permanent memory of something because Bruce is not exercising his brain. Although it may feel like he is reading, he could be scanning the book, which is different. He is not trying to fully understand the context of the book, which would increase his chances of memory. Instead he is using his short-term memory to memorize the words on each chapter,in hopes of recognizing and matching those words to the question on the exam. This type of studying is ineffective because the short-term memory box can only contain so much information before other contents in it start to escape. His method of studying is called the Maintenance rehearsal, which involves the rote repetition of the material, usually more effective for short-term memory. A better from of rehearsal for Bruce to practice would be the elaboration of encoding where he can associate the new items of information with materials that have already been stored in his brain. By doing so, Bruce would have been able to encode the concepts into his long-term memory. 2)Subconscious process-When I am consciously trying to remember where my keys are and why couldn't I find them, but then my mind is focused on something else, while my subconscious mind keeps working on looking for my keys. Unconscious process-my feelings of fear related to a personal trauma Mindlessness-I can listen to someone, whilst multi-tasking, i.e. typing an email.
