Question

Browse through the racks of nails, screws, etc., and select at least thirty different objects. These objects represent members of at least thirty different species in the Kingdom Hardware--each object representing a different species. Your task is to organize your species into genera, families, etc., in the manner of the Linnaean classification system. The Linnaean system has seven major levels of classification, beginning at the most general with the Kingdom, and ending with the most specific-the species. So your task is to organize your species into the six levels from species up to phylum. You might find it easiest to begin at the most specific level, and move toward the general. Spread your objects out and cluster them into categories based on similarities.

Explanation / Answer

Answer : classification of hardware :

As per carolus Linnaeus the domain of life is devided into 7 clusters. They are kingdom, phylum, classes, orders, family, genus and species .

Kingdom : as per the example let's think about overall kingdom of hardware. It includes all kinds of hardware like screws nails computer hardwares

Phylum: kingdom of hardware is divided into two phylum - metallic phylum and non metallic based on the material which it is made up of.

Classes : if we consider metallic hardware we can have built screws and nails made up of iron / steel

Orders : let's consider metallic screws which are ordered in wall screws and wood screws orders

Family : let's consider wood screws which could be classified based on head types as flat wood screws and non flat head screw

Genus: in non flat head wood screws there are three types of genus based on their shape of head like oval round button

Specues: if we continue with non flat oval wood screws they could be classified into oval point headed, oval large root diameter and oval AB pointed screws. As a species we can take the example of oval lArge root diameter of 2cm.

Each cluster should have common character. This is a practical example of Liannaean classification.
