Question
Someone suffered a debilitating stroke on the right side that left her paralyzed on the left side. Why would the symptoms not be on the same side as the damaged area in her brain. What does this say about the tracts that rub between the spinal and brain? Someone suffered a debilitating stroke on the right side that left her paralyzed on the left side. Why would the symptoms not be on the same side as the damaged area in her brain. What does this say about the tracts that rub between the spinal and brain?Explanation / Answer
IF THE STROKE IS CAUSED ON THE RIGHT SIDE , THE LEFT SIDE IS PARALYSED THIS IS SEEN IN THE HEMIPLEGIA ( ITS A TYPE OF PARALYSIS THAT AFFECTS ONE SIDE OF THE BODY) .
THIS IS BECAUSE -
THE BRAIN IS DIVIDED INTO TWO HEMISPHERE SEPRATED BY CORPUS CALLOSUM. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN CONTROLS THE LEFT SIDE OF BODY THE SAME IS TRUE FOR THE OPPOSITE SIDE . DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF BRAIN DUE TO STROKE CAN CAUSE THE LOSS IN FUNCTIONALITY OF THE LEFT SIDE OF BODY .
IMPORTANT POINTS ARE-
INFORMATION IS PROCESSED CONTRALATERALLY IN BRAIN ( THE ASCENDING PATHWAY FROM THE SPINAL CORD GOES TO OPPOSITE SIDES IN THE BRAIN FOR THE PROCESSING OF INFORMATION).
