Question

A 32-year-old wome received five units of group O, D-negative RBCs in the emergency room after a serious car accident. His blood type, which was determined from a sample collected before transfusion, was group O, D-negative. A sample was resubmitted 2 weeks after the accident for pretransfusion testing before surgery. the antibody screen was positive, and the antibodies identified were anti-D and anti-C?

1) what are the possible explanation for the antibodies?

2) what additional testing should be done to explain the problem?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1:-the women was o,d negative blood that means she doesnot have antigen A antigen B and the Rh that is the Antigen D on Her RBCs. This means that she has antibody A antibody B and Antibody D in her plasma. After transfusion of blood Rh antibodies are produced in the body that are antibody C and antibody D.this is the possible explaination of antibody C and D.

Ans 2:-we should test whether she is having any symtom of haemolysis.antibody and antigen reaction can cause lysis of RBC.we should also check whether the women is pregnent or not as the problem may also cause anti Rh hemolytic disease that can be fatal to both mother and child.we should test for anti rh antibodies.
