Struggle for existance: Population size remain to stable; According to Darwin's theory of natural selection, more individuals are produced each generation that can survive and struggle for exixtance occurs among them to survive because of limited sources. The individuals which bring the changes within themselves according to environmental need survive and other individuals do not survive and thus, the population size remain stable. If all the individuals will survive then population size will not be stable and become very large.
2. Differential survival and reproduction: Populations display variability among individuals; Differential survival according to environmental resources bring the phenotypic variability among individuals and thus phenotypic variation exists among individuals and the variation is heritable.
3. Gradual evolutionary change: Lyell was the close friend of Lemark but he accepted and supported the Darwin's theory of natural selection which is based on gradual evolutionary changes. In order to survive, individuals bring changes within themselves which inherit from one generation to other which ultimately results in evolution.
