Question

Scenario: Imagine you are a nurse/therapist working with a patient who is a traditional female Muslim. You assume that she is traditional since she is wearing traditional cultural clothing. She does not speak English and the male companion, who is with her, does not speak English very well. She is bent over in pain and her hands are clenching her stomach. The man, obviously upset, is demanding that you "Fix her now!" The woman appears frightened when you approach her. Using the information you have learned from your life-span psychology course, explain how you will effectively resolve this escalating situation. 4)

Explanation / Answer

4) In the given situation, since the patient and the patient’s attendant cannot verbally communicate the exact nature of the patient’s problem, we would use th nonverbal cure and the valuable information about the patient’s gestures to understand the presenting problem, it is likely that the identified patient, the woman is pregnant and she is having an issue with her pregnancy. The first step would be to calm the patient And then her accomplice and getting a wheelchair so that the patient and her accomplice would know that our intention is to provide medical help to them in the situation. Her sense of fear could be associated with both her medical condition as well as her age and culturally identity which may perhaps make her feel less secure and more anxious. It is likely that she is a young independent adult and has come to the hospital emergency room to seek treatment on her own.

The next step would be to do preliminary medical examination and check whether the patient is undergoing labor pain or is experiencing some issues with her pregnancy that could lead to a miscarriage of the foetus, etc. However, in the situation that pregnancy can’t be determined then other examinations such as asking the attendant about the beginning of the presenting problem, whether she ate something, whether there is a history of ulcers or hernia, any gastric symptom of food poisoning etc. which could help to arrive at a diagnosis and consequent treatment.
