Question

Please response/comment to the follwong discussion. Response must be well thought-out and complete sentences. Do you agree or disagree and why? etc.

When considering sending your child to daycare or having the child stay home, one must consider the developmental elements and how these would be impacted in both settings. If the child is in an environment where they are receiving proper nutrition, are mentally simulated through play, and are interacting with their care-givers and peers, they have the potential to develop normally. These standards are attainable in both settings, but these settings may emphasize one area of development over the other. With that being said, when choosing day-care vs. staying at home, one must consider that each child has a different needs, temperament and personality and how their needs would be met/not met in each of the settings. For instance, a “difficult” child may do better developmentally having a stay at home parent (if the parent is a “good-fit”) as the parent will provide the extra emotional support the child needs. If this child was in day-care, the availability of the care-givers is often limited as they are watching more than one child at a time and probably will not have the ability to give that child the individualized attention that they may need. When I am a parent, I will take this principle and apply it to my own situation, asking myself, “What will help them developmentally in the long run?” I am open to the many child-care possibilities that this answer may bring, including having the father stay home or sending them to a day-care, etc. What is most important is giving each child a firm developmental foundation so that they grow up and become competent adults.

Thank you so much!!!

Explanation / Answer

Yes, of course there is a need to evaluate the day cares that a parent chooses for their concerned child, and also the fact that day cares should be chosen according to the ones which are congruent with the child's demeanor.

A child can develop attachment issues if kept in day care for the most integral and formational years of their life. An assessment needs to be done of the child's temperament which helps a parent ascertain the day care most compatible with the child's needs, and also the number of days and time spent at the day care as opposed to home.

There needs to be a healthy balance with respect to the amount the child's stays in the care of other people than the parents themselves, especially if the child is known to have a difficult demeanor
