Question

Watch this video of a small group working on solving a problem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDSFnpKs_lo

I recommend you play the video with the sound turned off so you can focus on group members’ actions, not their words. As you watch, take note of the nonverbal communication you see. Specifically, note posture, movement, and gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, and seating arrangement.

Reflection Paper #1 Prompt

Write an analysis of the group’s nonverbal communication. Specifically, you should:

Describe the group members’ use of emblems, illustrators, affect displays, regulators, and/or adaptors

Discuss how body posture and movement communicates members’ status and attitudes

Note any use of the four functions of eye contact in the group

Note relationships among seating arrangement, leadership, status, and verbal interaction in the group

To help you describe what you are seeing clearly, please refer to the individuals based on the chair they are sitting in (from left to right around the table).

Chair 1: Man in blue hat

Chair 2: Woman in orange jacket

Chair 3: Woman in black sweatshirt

Chair 4: Man in grey shirt

Chair 5: Man in blue shirt

Additionally, when you are discussing a specific example, please include the timestamp (e.g., “At 0:59 the man in chair 4 used a regulator by pointing to the man in chair 5 to let him know that he wanted him to speak next).

Overall, how does the nonverbal behavior of the group seem to contribute to the group’s climate?

Explanation / Answer

Man in chair 4 is heading the group and man in chair 5 is the most active person in the group with open mindedness in his approach followed by chair 3 woman . For first 2.minutes chair 1 and chair 2 remain almost silent and in between tat time chair 2 was confused also a little bit which is clear from her particular lips gestures . She also expects the chair 1 person to speak something which chair 1 person started slowly after half of the discussion was over. In one word , this discussions and the problem was sorted out by chair 3 , 4 and 5 . Chair 1 and 2 just obeyed their decisions by not entering into any further discussions which shows that they are less interested in discussing further .
