Question

Introversion and Extraversion characteristics and their effects on Marital bliss (title)

The variables introversion and extraversion are known to have varying effects on individuals

lives and collective lives and on the levels of happiness. The aim is to measure the synergistic

affect between the two and the happiness index as a result (hypothesis). In this study, using the variables and sampling below, How will you measure each variable? Discussing the

reliability and validity of these measures in general terms. What technique will be used for data collection (e.g., observation, survey, interview, archival, etc.)?

1. For this study, the convenience sampling technique can be used. Married individuals can be recruited through advertisements on the internet as well as the newspaper.

2. Since a non-probability sampling technique is being employed, the results cannot be generalised to the population with a great degree of accuracy. However, it can be at least partially applied to urban couples.

3. The independent variable is synergistic affect of introversion-extraversion. The dependent variable is happiness index.

4. The degree of introversion/extraversion would be the score obtained on the Extraversion scale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory.

Happiness index would be defined as the score obtained on the Oxford Happiness Inventory (Argyle and Hill)

Explanation / Answer

In the given study, the null hypothesis states that there will be a Significant difference in the synergistic affect between the introversion and extroversion personality characteristics on the individuals’s Happiness Index. Here, The independent variable is the combined influence of both introversion and extroversion rather than just one of them. In other words, when they are combined together they produce a greater effect than the sum of the individual traits of introversion and extroversion. The independent variable will be studied using the scores on the extroversion scale in Esync’s Personality Inventory(EPI). Here, a high score

The dependent variable will be measured by obtaining and comparing the participants score or Happiness Index on the Oxford Happiness Inventory(OPI).

The sample will be first administered the EPI in order to obtain the data for the independent variable. In the latter phase, they will be administered the OPI to assess the dependent variable. An average of the introversion-extroversion Score will yield the measure of the independent variable and this will be then compared with the mean score of Happiness Index for the sample.

Since the given study is based on a non-probability sampling, it is seen that the survey method as a research method would help to increase the reliability of the findings since it would ensure that a large enough sample of participants are administered uniform and objective questionnaires or Inventories which could help to reduce the observer’s biases such as associating Extroverted participants as more social, approachable and therefore happier in mere face-to-face interactions.
