The variables introversion and extraversion are known to have varying effects on individuals

lives and collective lives and on the levels of happiness. The aim is to measure the synergistic

affect between the two and the happiness index as a result. (hypothesis) What type of research design should be used for this study? What procedure should i use while conducting this

The given research can be Carried out using the survey method where a random group of married couples living in the different neighbourhoods of a town would be contacted using the local phone book and the couples would be requested and asked about their interest in volunteering for a study. Then, after obtaining the sample pool, the participants would be administered Esynck’s Peronality Inventory to obtain a measure of the introversion and extroversion personality traits present in them. Then, they would be administered a Happiness scale such as the Oxford Happiness Inventory to obtain a Happiness Index as a measured of the dependent variable.

Thus, the survey technique would be useful for establishing validity for the hypothesis about a significant relationship between extroversion and introversion traits and the experience of marital bliss in married people.

However, there can be some major ethical challenges in the development of such a study. For one, there is a potential risk of surveyors showings a bias in selecting only a particular social goup or strata of married couples as their participants and ignoring the differences and the heterogeneity of marital relationships. For instance, the research may get biased towards making generalisations about all married couples based on a study of only heterosexual White, ‘rich’ couples which would result in negation of other groups such as ‘inter-racial married couples, couples in an immigrant family, African American couples, Hispanic couples, homosexual married couples.

Another major ethical issue in such a construction of the study can emanate with respect to its adherence to a heteronormative and hegemonic idea of the institution of arraign itself as the study purports to narrow down happiness in love relationships to a marital status only. Such a theoretical construction seems to be antagonistic to the life experiences and personal ideologies of several other couples in society who exert their choice to stay together outside the institution of marriage. The study however seems to ignore this reality and it would therefore fall prone to lack of generalisation as the sample would not be truly representative of the population. A plausible way to address this ethical dilemma is to widen the definition of happiness in a love relationship and randomly selecting participants from these varied groups to increase the representativeness of the sample.

Another ethical concern which may become a challenge is the researcher’s success in ensuring confidentiality of the participants’ responses. The participants have a right to not have their overall scores and responses to specific personal and controversial issues, be disclosed to any third party or be used in any other way outside the context of the study. In particular, the inclusion of both the partners in a relationship would entail a greater effort to ensure that both partners are protected from a mutual confidentiality and anonymity.
