(Answer) According to Freud’s findings in psychoanalytic studies, he believed that the unconscious mind or the superego had a greater influence on human behaviour than people suspect. His repression theory suggests that repressed emotions or memories lie in the superego. These memories and emotions are later translated into negative behaviour like stress, anxiety, dissociation, hostility etc.
In his defence, disorders like dissociative amnesia or even dissociative identity disorder are proven to be caused by extreme stress and bad memories. This is when the superego creates odd coping mechanisms to help the brain cope with the stress that stems from stored memories in the unconscious mind.
An artist like Vincent Van Gogh is the perfect example of how stress and repression leads to the superego influencing one’s behaviour or activities, in this case, it is his paintings. Van Gogh was able to translate his mental pain into his work. Furthermore, artists who go beyond aestheticism and have their work influenced by political and social turmoil might have an influence of their superego on their work.
