Question

1. Explain in your own words the three groups of coping strategies.

2. Mitchell created an inventory called The Index of Problematic Online Experiences. They “defined problematic Internet use as use that interferes with intrapersonal (e.g., embarrassed by use), interpersonal (e.g., lost friends), and daily (e.g., lost sleep) functioning and/or creates legal or work-related difficulties” (Deatherage, Servaty-Seib, & Aksoz, 2014, p. 41). Based on your observations, how prevalent are problematic internet use and experiences in college students? What are some things that the University can do to help students who have these problems?

3. Based on your experience and observations, what are some of the sources of stress among college students? What would be some positive ways that students can cope with the stress instead of going online to avoid the problem?

Explanation / Answer

These internet problems mentioned above are much prevelant in college students. Internet is not only used for seeking information, but also for finding small solutions to problems. Since social networking has given easy access to everything college students are constantly on these sites in order to be connected. They are awake in night to be in touch with their friends, or even social networking allows to keep an eye on their love life etc/ Due to this constant updated informtaion which greedy brain is seeking, they might unergo through emotional disturbaces because it is not giving a break to mind. And all these are causing intrapersonal, interpersoanl and daily problems.

Universites or rather teachers can tell the students who are not much emotionally matured to be away from all these things and to find peace somewhere. They can also built some rooms where there can be no range for mobile, usage of mobile in college campus can be prevented.

When I was in college internet was not much used. We could afford to go to cafes only on weekends or so. There was no internet at home or our mobiles were not smart phones. University students are young, they come across vareity of other people besides their environment. They get exposure to many things, different people, different culture which can be stressful as well. Besides some students have problems of opening up directly hence they find social networks helpful to break the ice. Some interpersonal problems which students try to solve online can be more easily solved face to face. They would come to know the power of real world over to virtual world. They can also solve their intrapersoanl problem by telling their feeling directly to some friend, instead of mentioning of the social networking websites etc.
