Question
1. Explain how carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases can lead to global warming.
2. What are some of the possible effects of a significant average temperature rise?
3. What do we know for sure and what are the big uncertainties about global warming?
4. The sun is the key energy input to the planet and we need to harness it for carbon free or low carbon energy sources, Most of people understand that photovoltaic solar panels get their energy from the sun. However, many people fail to realize that some other alternative energy sources also get their energy from the sun. Explain how wind, hydroelectric and biofuels are all really just types of solar energy.
Explanation / Answer
1.
Green house gases sops the heat which are escaping the earth surface that is they dont allow heat to cross earth atmosphere. Hence heat remains trap on earth and it increases the heat. They allow heat from sun to reach earth as they are of smaller wavelength. Heat reflected from earth are of larger wavelength.
So they cause warming by trapping large wavelength heat that are not able to crosss
2.
Temperature rise may cause:
a. Rising of level of sea due to thermal expansion
b. melting of glaciers and ice sheets
c. warming of ocean surface leading to increased temperature stratification
