Question
n 1965, a company called Educational and Psychological Films produced a series of therapy vignettes called "the Gloria Tapes," featuring the same woman, Gloria, in therapy sessions with the founders of three important psychotherapeutic approaches: Carl Rogers (client centered), Fritz Perls (Gestalt), and Albert Ellis (rational emotive).
For this discussion, first watch the video.
Then watch the video.
After viewing, please answer the following questions:
Identify and describe the basic counseling strategies that you see Carl Rogers using with Gloria.
In your assessment, how effective were these techniques in beginning this therapeutic alliance?
Explanation / Answer
Basic counselling skills used by Carl rogers here are-
Empathy (to put yourself in client's shoe and understand their story from their point of view)
Psychological contact (rapport with the client)
Non-judgemental (to accept the client as he is )
Unconditional positive regard (giving client positive appreciations and renforcements )
In my opinion, a therapeutic alliance such of Carl rogers is very effective in helping the client explore all his alternatives in a safe environment. It gives him/her an opportunity to understand oneself in an environment which is free from societal norms.
For example- A single mother in India who wantes to date again might not be able to do so because of her culture and therefore might repress her thoughts. In a rogerian counselling, Counsellor would just facilitate her thpughts so that she can atleast accept to herself that she wants to date again.
