Question
Effects of Breaking a Social Norm. Give some thought to the social norms influencing your current behavior. Identify one that you will break. Be sure that you do not pick one that will cause harm to you or someone else and DO NOT break any laws. Let me repeat that, "DO NOT PUT YOURSELF OR ANYONE AT DANGER AND DO NOT BREAK LAWS." Some examples of social norms that students have violated are sitting with strangers at the same table at the food court in the mall, men wearing lipstick and nail polish, going into the revolving door with a stranger, singing happy birthday in the elevator, taking items out of other people's grocery carts, etc. After you have decided what social norm you will break, pick a couple of situations which you will break this norm. These should be situations where other people will witness your behavior. The kind of situations you pick will depend on the norms you choose. Pay attention to your feelings and reactions just prior to breaking the norm, how you feel while you are breaking the norm, and.also after you are done. Pay attention to the reactions of other people around you as you are breaking the norm. Some students have found this easier to do if they have a friend with them who knows what is going on as they break the norm.Explanation / Answer
A social standard is a direction or anticipation that rules people groups ethics, convictions, activities, demeanors, and practices. These directions are anticipated of people in certain places and settings and are in this manner used to lead person conduct which decides what is considered fitting or improper. It could be contended that those who are denounced for breaking the standards are seen as 'abnormal'. Standards can alter concurring to the environment, circumstance, and culture in which they are found, and people's behavior will too alter in like manner. Social standards may too alter or be adjusted over time.
Social Norms Regarding Public Behavior: Say "please" when asking for something and say "thank you" when someone does something for you OR If someone sneezes near you, say "bless you."
Social Norms on the elevator: Do not talk with food in your mouth OR Chew with your mouth closed and avoid making loud sounds while chewing.
There are many example or social norms but purely depend on the situation and with kind of people u are with. If I give the example of mine, once I visited: "big bazaar" which is a mall where you get all the possible things. It has Entry where you need to pick up your trolly when you're no comes. Couple of them is in bad shape so to avoid discomfort some people pick and some don't. But I picked up because I was running out of time but I did not anticipate the level of discomfort I will face with the broken wheel.. While picking up things I realized it's not happening and at the same time I came across the trolly in good condition belong to someone who is also in the purchase process. So I had broken the norm by taking the trolly and shuffle the stuff for my comfort without thinking what another person might face. Surprisingly the person to whom that trolly belongs have seen me in that act of change and tried approaching me to stop. But I ignore and rushed and changed the lane to avoid. To an extent, i felt bad and it was adventurous at the same time.
