Question
For this discussion, you will be watching a section of a TED Talk and then talking about any heuristics or biases that you see at play in the scenario presented. 1) Watch the first 8 minutes and 44 seconds (to 8:44) of the TED Talk, linked below. You are welcome to watch more, but that will be enough to answer the questions.

Name the type of heuristic and explain how that heuristic was used to help someone make a decision. 3) In what ways did bias come in to play? What particular types of bias did you see, and how did they impact decisions in this example? Make sure to cite any outside sources. If you have questions about how to cite, please see the guide posted on Canvas and/or contact your instructor or T.A.

(Answer) The heuristics discussed are insinuations in the “smashed” and “hit” accident photo and “stop” and “yield” in the second photo. In the example of the US military, the main heuristic is pressure as a stimulus.
Heuristics are shortcuts that help arrive at a certain conclusion. In this video, we see that the focus groups were “nudged” in a certain direction. This was done to check if the subjects stay true to the actual memory of the incident or are nudged towards the false memory based on these “shortcuts” provided.
Bias came into play when the word “smash” and “yield” were used. The word “smash” made people “remember” broken glass on the accident scene when in fact there was none. The word “yield” made individuals remember a “yield” sign instead of the original stop sigh. Furthermore, the soldiers remembered completely different faces of tortures under pressure just like the rape victim.
These heuristics were influenced by pressure, implications and a certain play on the sub-conscious mind that affected the workings of the conscious mind.
One may refer to Freud’s analysis of the subconscious mind and how it affects the superego of the conscious mind. This would mean that the subconscious minds of these individuals were not just as compelled to stick to the true memory and hence its effect was evident in their conscious actions.
