Question
The legislature of Hypothetical Country is debating a bill that would allow
law-enforcement agencies to conduct more intensive (and currently illegal) surveillance of all blue-
haired citizens. The proponents of the bill argue, “Though blue-haired citizens make up for just 20% of
the population, they are responsible for 80% of the crimes in this country. So the odds of a blue-haired
citizens committing a crime are high. Therefore, more intensive surveillance is justified.” Evaluate
this argument. If more information is needed, identify what it is and explain how it is relevant.
Explanation / Answer
Here Population proportion of blue haired citizens = 0.20
proprtion of crimes committed by blue haired citizens = 0.80
We can not evaluate this argument without knowing the population size of crimes and population of the city. If we get thesre values we can do hypothesis testing with the help of chi - square test for odds ratio and evaluate that blue haired citizens are more prone to committing crime or not. If it is there, they will be surveillanced more.
