Question

Do you drink the recommended amount of water each day? Most Americans don't! On average, Americans drink 5.5 eight-oz servings of water a day. A sample of 45 education professionals was randomly selected and their water consumption for a 24-hour period was monitored; the mean amount consumed was 46.2 oz. Assuming the amount of water consumed daily by adults is normally distributed and the standard deviation is 10.6 oz, is there sufficient evidence to show that education professionals consume, on average, more water daily than the national average? Use = .05.

(a) Find z. (Give your answer correct to two decimal places.)

(ii) Find the p-value. (Give your answer correct to four decimal places.)

(b) State the appropriate conclusion.

Reject the null hypothesis, there is significant evidence that education professionals consume more water daily.

Fail to reject the null hypothesis, there is significant evidence that education professionals consume more water daily.

Reject the null hypothesis, there is not significant evidence that education professionals consume more water daily.

Fail to reject the null hypothesis, there is not significant evidence that education professionals consume more water daily.

Explanation / Answer

(a) Null Hypothesis : H0 : Average water consumption for educated professionals for drinking water is equal to American average water consumption educated- water = Americanwater

Alternative Hypothesis : H1 : Average water consumption for educated professionals for drinking water is more than American average water consumption educated- water Americanwater

Z = ( Xbar - )/ (/n) = ( 46.2 - 8 * 5.5 )/ ( 10.6/ 45) = 2.2/ 1.58 = 1.3924

so Zcriticialfor alpha = 0.05 =>  Zcriticial= 1.65

p - value = 1- 0.9182 = 0.0818 > 0.05 so cannot reject null hypothesis.

so, here z < Zcriticial , so we cannot reject null hypothesis and can conclude that there is no difference in educated people water consumption and Americans.

(B) We fail to reject null hypothesis, there is not significant evidence that educational professionals consume more water daily.
